The Australian Technical Advisory group on Immunisation(ATAGI) has reviewed their advice on AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. The new advice, accepted by the Commonwealth Government, now recommends the Pfizer vaccine as the preferred vaccine for people aged under 60.
This recommendation is based on new evidence that has emerged that demonstrates a greater risk of Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome(TTS) in the 50-59 year old age group than initially thought. The incidence of TTS is significantly lower in people aged over 60 and the benefits of the vaccine still vastly outweigh any risk for people in this age group as they are much more likely to become seriously unwell if they catch COVID-19.
People who have had a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and did not experience any serious adverse effects, will be offered a second AstraZeneca dose. The ATAGI advice remains unchanged that it is safe to have the second dose of AstraZeneca and that an alternative vaccine should not be used at this stage for the second dose if aged under 60.
